Real Betis player William Carvalho is being investigated for rape. Carvalho, 31-year-old citizen of Portugal and Angola, is scheduled to play against Dinamo Zagreb in the European Conference League in nine days. The unnamed 30-year-old woman filed a complaint stating that the footballer drugged and raped her in a hotel in Seville. Carvalho met the woman last summer on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, where she works as a nurse. They went to Sevilla, where Carvalho plays for Betis, and the next morning she woke up alone in the hotel room with visible signs of rape on her body and no clear memory of what happened. She believes the footballer drugged her drink at the disco and then raped her in the previously reserved hotel room. The woman provided medical documentation with details of the assault. Carvalho was caught on hotel cameras leaving the hotel at 7 a.m., two hours after entering the room with her. The woman attempted to contact him the next day to talk about what happened and whether he used protection, but he replied that he had to go to Lisbon and left her his friend's phone number. Carvalho told the judge that he had consensual sexual encounters with her in Ibiza and Seville, and that he no longer wanted to see her. The rape report was filed a week after the incident in the Sevilla hotel. Carvalho left the court on Tuesday without any special precautions. The judge did not request payment of bail or impose a restraining order on the woman who reported him. However, the player, who has played 17 times for Betis this season, remains under investigation. Carvalho's lawyer issued a statement stating that Carvalho is innocent and that the accusation is completely untrue.
